The blog is back!

Come on out of the cold – the blog is back!

Perils of change

I’ve always disliked web hosts, as many of them try hard to suck beyond belief. MediaTemple, however, has been pretty good to me so far. Up until I tried to make some changes.

As you may have noticed, my Rails-powered blog is down, shot dead by MT’s rails hosting environment, which has to be one of the most brittle systems I’ve ever had to work with. The error messages are so cryptic, so plentiful and so annoying that I’m seriously considering going through the costly process of setting up my own server.

I’d been working on a new design for my blog, and the time had come to upload and publish the thing, a part of the process which should be the parade run at the end of a long and arduous journey. What works on my machine though, would seem to be close to impossible to get up and running on a hosted server.

The least enjoyable part of this is of course that after uploading and attempting to start my new system, which literally crashed and burned, the old blog won’t start either. One step forward, two steps back, as they say.

So this post comes from my temporary setup, a free blog on wordpress.com. If it hadn’t been for Feedburner, which lets me change my old feed url, I’d be royally screwed.

I’ll hopefully be back up and running at bjorkoy.com shortly. In the mean time, happy new year. :)
